How to: Dye Ombre Hair Color

I have been obsessed lately with ombre hair color. I think its one of those things that once you become aware of something, suddenly you see it everywhere. Like when you really want a new drawstring bucket bag and suddenly everyone but you has one.

I was first inspired by the pics of Drew Barrymore who went for a more dramatic color change, but upon google image searching, I discovered that quite a few celebrities are sporting this hair trend. And it makes sense because it means less trips to the salon and a more natural sunkissed look perfect for the beachy casual atmosphere here on the Gold Coast.

So i decided to give it a go. My hairdresser was on holidays in New Zealand, and I just had to have it before I started back to work, so I decided to do it myself (how hard could it be?) I bought a box of dye, invited a girlfriend over, whipped up a batch of margeritas and went for it.

Now I didnt realize until You Tubing how to do it that I am going about it all wrong. Apparently the easy way is to hair dark hair and dye the ends lighter. I wanted to do the opposite because I have blonde hair but wanted to put the darker at my roots to camoflage my regrowth.

So for those of you doing this at home the traditional way, see below video for a great tutorial.



As for me and my friend, we had it a little harder. We had to do it backwards and more like you do when your touching up your roots or putting in highlights.

1. She went through and put the dark color about an inch or two at my roots and left it for about 10 minutes before
2. taking a medium wide tooth comb and combing it down about 4 inches. This helped to give it the faded look so it wasnt quite as thick as at the roots, but still left a few blonde highlights.
3. She then just put a little bit of dye on her gloves and pieced it down in small strands to just below my ears to keep the highlighted look running through and stop it from having a hard ending line.
4. Thats it, just check to make sure your color is pretty even all around and wash it out.


I am really happy with my end result, I put a dark chestnut brown through and am really happy with the contrast to the honey blonde I had before. What do you think?
