How to turn off the TV and get a Life: Day 1
Seeing as this is the beginning of the year and the time to start fresh with things, I have declared a no tv zone in our house for the next 2 weeks. Yes that's right kids, 2 weeks. Now for those of you who are the annoyingly active productive people that don't own a TV, or who have the most amazing social life and don't turn yours on; well you people can just keep on moving because I don't like you much anyways.
For the rest of you, you are among friends. Friends who enjoy coming home after a long day and relaxing on the couch. Friends who want to turn off their brain for a little while and do nothing. Friends who deep down love a good story with a happy ending and live vicariously through the always peppy, never have a bad hair day or use the toilet heroines of our nightly virtual pilgrimage. Friends, I am one of you. So now you can understand what a huge thing this is for me.
Why do you ask, did I make this decision? Well, friend, I'm glad you asked.
It was brought on by some time ( or lack hereof) of end of the year reflection. In realizing the sheer busyness, stress and tiredness that seemed to be my constant companion in 2010, I wanted something better for the year ahead. I can already see big things shaping up for 2011, and I want to be prepared for it, rather than just reacting to it.
Our church does a time of fasting at the beginning of every year, and I think this is my year to take it seriously. But even if your not religious, I'm sure we could all do with a little bit more thinking space, more time spent unplugging from our gadgets and more time planning our lives and dreaming about our futures.
As a side note I am also cutting out alcohol and weeknight dinners for the two weeks, I'm hoping by telling you it will keep me honest so I don't go sneaking some cookies and a glass of wine while my hubby is out. Plus I'm hoping this will have the added benefit of helping to lose those few extra holiday pounds that have crept up. :)
I will keep you updated on my progress, and hopefully by the end of the 2 weeks I will have achieved some things and made a few steps towards becoming a better person.
As for today, I have completed 1 1/2 days so far and am feeling pretty good. The time went really quickly and I ended up in bed with a sense of accomplishment and looking forward to having more of that precious thing that we sometimes throw away so lightly; time.
And when I googled it, I found this website turn off your tv which gives some very cool and interesting other reasons to turn off your tv, like how it contributes to health problems, overeating, ADD, distorted reality, increased violence, low self esteem, national debt, and lots of other bad stuff.
Has anyone tried this experiment, and how did it turn out?
