The Princess and the Frog movie introduces the new Disney princess
It's been eleven years since there was a Disney princess and that was Mulan in 1998. Now, Disney is striking out with The Princess and the Frog which introduces us to Princess Tianna, the first African-American Disney princess. The film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios (formerly known as Walt Disney Feature Animation) creation, is set during the jazz age in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
It was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements who were also the directors of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Great Mouse Detective,Treasure Planet and Hercules.
Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) voices the young princess who is a waitress who dreams of owning her own restaraunt. Her path soon crosses with Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) who has been transformed into a frog by an evil witch doctor, while his man servant is posing as the prince in human form. As fate would have it, the princess is also turned in a frog after a kiss from the prince and in traditional Disney princess doctrine, she must overcome an obstacle to break free and win her true happiness. Yes, it is loosely based off the familiar tale of princes being turned into frogs and E.D Baker's 2002 novel, The Frog Princess. Of course following suit with other Disney princess films, it will be complete with song and dance, magic, and animals.
Besides Rose, some well-known names in the entertainment industry such as Oprah Winfrey, John Goodman, Terrance Howard lend their voices to the cast.
Although the film has yet to be widely released, merchandise for the movie is flying off the shelves; Princess Tiana costumes sold out this Halloween, as did, hair products for young girls marketed with Princess Tianna's likeness.
A few theaters across the nation already opened the movie to select theaters on November 25th, but on December 11th, The Princess and the Frog will be released nationwide
